This is caused by Human Immunodeficiency Virus which can be passed from person to person by sexual contact, including oral sex, anal sex, and also through infected blood and by sharing needles and works and in other ways. It may cause a flu like symptoms within a few weeks of infection but many infected people have no symptoms at all. There is no cure for this currently however early diagnosis and modern treatments can prevent transmission and mean that most people can live longer, healthier lives.

There is also medication called PrEP (Pre Exposure Prophylaxis) available that can protect you from acquiring HIV and condoms and dental dams are always advisable.

HIV can easily be tested for with a blood test from the Choices clinic, the Orchard Centre or your GP. Please contact the clinic for more information or to arrange a blood test or drop in during our opening hours.
